Roofing is no easy task. In fact, it’s painstakingly monotonous. But at Northface Construction, it’s what we do and it’s what we are passionate about. And we do it right.
As a team of experienced, professional roofers, we understand what it takes to create a roof that not only withstands the elements but will also keep you and your family safe.
With today’s installment of the ‘Ask a Roofer’ series, we’re breaking down what exactly the process is for roof replacement, as well as some of the mistakes some roofers make.
The Tear-Off
It’s a dirty job, but someone’s gotta do it. The tear-off of the current roof is a process in itself. Everyone has their preferred method of doing it, whether it’s with hammers, a prybar, or pitchfork.
Whatever tool is used, it’s essential that during the tear-off, all the old nails are removed from the wood. Otherwise, you can potentially compromise the integrity of the new roof.
You also have to make sure that you inspect the under-lament of the roof and address any rotten wood from previous leaks. We have such a good feel for the strength of the wood on a roof that most of the time we can tell the durability of the wood just by walking on it and feeling things out.
Remember, it’s always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to your roof. So, if there are some weaker parts of the wood, we recommend making sure to replace those areas.
Clean-Up
Once the tear-off is complete, clean-up begins.
Clean-up is an essential part of the process not only because it makes the rest of the job easier when the property is clean, but it’s also being respectful of the homeowner. Before hiring a professional roofer, make sure that they understand the importance of cleaning up after the tear-down.
Putting on New Under-Lament
Once everything is cleaned up, the next step is to put new under-lament on. This means making sure you have ice and water shields on your eave edges, which is essentially wherever you would place a gutter on a home.
Next, depending on the home and the situation, you’ll place a 15-30 lbs felt down as well.

Install Proper Flashing
After the under-lament, the flashing must be properly installed. This includes your drip edge and the gutter apron which goes on the edges of the roof to hold your paper on the rake ends.
The flashing is key to the quality of the roof, so make sure your roofer doesn’t take any shortcuts here.
Nailing Down the Shingles
For the next step, you have to start nailing the shingles down. Some roofers go straight up and down when nailing the shingles, but this the incorrect way to do so and is not code-compliant. Instead, you have to do it at an angle.
This is tough work and should not be underestimated. That’s why we always recommend that homeowners hire a professional to do it right. Hiring a professional, experienced roofer means you know they’ll do the job right and you’ll have a high-quality roof when it’s all said and done.
Unless roofing is your day job, don’t do it on your own.
Placing the Ridge Cap On
Last but not least, you have to put the ridge cap on, which goes right along the top of the roof, otherwise known as the ridge.
It’s quite the feeling when you finish installing the ridge cap, as you get to take a step back and appreciate all the hard work that went into creating the finished product.
