Why You Should Make Remodeling Decisions as a Team

Posted by Northface Construction  - Owner & Founder

When it comes to remodeling your home, that’s a big decision to make, and shouldn’t be rushed into. From our experience, we have found it makes the project go much more smoothly when spouses or the household make these decisions together and everyone is a part of the entire process, beginning to end. We want to work with all the decision-makers to avoid phone tag, confusion, and to make sure everyone understands the process.

Often times, a spouse or partner may have a more dominating role over the other when it comes to big decision making for the household. But, when it comes to remodeling your home it’s very important to thoroughly discuss it with your partner, and make that decision together for many reasons.

Y0u’re Spending a Lot of Money

Whether you and your spouse have a shared bank account, or shared expenses, or one is the provider in the family – you’re spending a lot of money! Remodeling your home, or make any sort of renovation big or small is a major investment. We know it’s not everyone’s favorite topic to discuss with their partner, but having your budget thoroughly laid out, and discussing the best way to spend your money on this can give you the best result possible. Avoid conflict by talking about your budget early, and do your research. Talking with your contractor very early on in the planning process can help you and your partner layout a nice budget early on, and avoid any surprises down the road.

It’s Your Shared Space

You both live in your house, so you should both enjoy how it looks and feels, right? One member of the household may have more knowledge or more ideas when it comes to design, but without getting the input of the other person or people in the home, it could end up a way that not everyone loves. We think that everyone should have a say in what the end product will look like. Maybe make a fun activity out of design planning. The person who loves to take part in the design process could take their partner to the hardware store, or browse online together and build out a design board of options. With everyone contributing ideas and narrowing down the color options and design options can help your home get an end product that means so much more because everyone loves it, and everyone had a part in planning it.

Understanding the Complexities

When we meet with a client to discuss a repair, remodel, or renovation there are a lot of complexities that go into the work we do and we want our client to understand every step of the way. What we can relay to a client in 30 minutes to an hour, may take much longer for them to reiterate to their partner or spouse because they aren’t the experts. We would LOVE to meet with both parties that are making the decision so they can feel they know everything we are going to do. It saves us time, and it saves you time. We can avoid miscommunications, unanswered questions, and playing phone tag if everyone is included in the process from beginning to end.

Benefits of Making the Decision Together

Both parties feel a sense of inclusion, loyalty, and know they have support in every decision they make. Once you’ve made a big decision together, it trickles into other decisions. Each one is like a pact that you are on the same page and have one another’s support. Relational experts have said that each “pact” and decision made is a renewal to each other and a commitment to always work together no matter what. Build your home while you build your relationship.

We know your time is valuable, and we also know what it means to take this step towards updating your home. If you aren’t happy with the end results, then we didn’t do our job. We want to support and protect your big investment, and you should too. So making these big decisions together as a couple can make all the difference when it comes to how we communicate with you, how you communicate with each other, and how satisfied you will be at the end of the day.
