Frost in Attics: How it Happens and How to Fix it

Posted by Northface Construction  - Owner & Founder

Frost in the attic is a difficult problem to identify. Once it does make itself noticeable, it can be too late to stop the damage from occurring.

In fact, many homeowners don’t realize that frost buildup in your attic is even possible. However, in older homes, it is a fairly common problem and can cause serious damage to your home.

Today, we’re going to focus on frost in the attic, what causes it, and how to fix it.

What Causes Frost in Your Attic

Remember that polar vortex we had not too long ago – where we had 70-degree temperature swings in about 48 hours? Well, temperature fluctuations like that are a prime culprit for frost in the attic.

The humid air in your home rises to the top of your home (the attic) when the temperature gets too low. Then the air condensates on the wood of the interior of your roof, which is the coldest part of the attic. Then, it freezes against the wood and all of a sudden you have frost.

This is usually a problem for older homes, which were built before the proper building codes were put in place to mitigate this problem. So, why is frost in your attic so bad?

The Issue With Frost In Your Attic

Once the air becomes frost, the next step is for it to start thawing when the temperature goes up again. The next thing you know, your roof appears to be leaking. We have many people call us each year and tell us their roof is leaking, but once we get up in the attic and start inspecting the home, we can see that it is actually frost that is melting that is causing the water damage.

As you know, water in the home can cause serious harm to drywall, paint, furniture, and more.

So, initially the frost does not cause much damage, but once it starts to melt, you can be in a world of trouble. To avoid this, follow these tips.

How to Mitigate Frost in Your Attic And Home

For starters, try not to run your humidifier in the winter if you can help it. This can help to avoid the humid air buildup in your attic. Another small thing you can do is run your ventilation fan a little longer after taking a shower to get all that humidity out of your home.

If your home is on the older side, then have a professional come into the home and check out the infrastructure. They’ll be able to come in and check for vulnerable areas that can lead to frost. They’ll seal any of the bypasses in your attic and can put roofing-approved boxes over them to ensure they are covered properly.

A professional contractor can also remove any of the insulation in your attic and replace it with spray foam that will do a better job at keeping your attic secure. By using spray foam, your home will be sealed and insulated all in one step. Make sure your roof has proper ventilation as well, which includes roof vents and shoots in the soffits.

As another preventive measure, you can have a professional come to your home and do an energy efficiency audit. These audits are simple tests that can help you identify where the inefficiencies are. Because every home is different – age, size, material – this test will allow the contractor to propose a solution that fits your home.
