Today Josh is walking through an awesome exterior project Northface Construction did for a client in Minneapolis. They already had some nice exterior stonework, and wanted an accent of cedar shingling added. It turned out beautiful!
Benefits of Cedar Siding
There are many benefits to using cedar shingles. They are lightweight and very low density, which makes them extremely energy efficient. They do not allow heat to escape in the winter, nor cold to escape during the summer. They will save you a ton of money on energy costs. They withstand the elements like humidity that we deal with here in Minnesota. They will not swell or change shape, keeping that installation tightly fastened and long-lasting. Cedar is also very workable in that it has a very straight, even, grain and texture. They are easy to cut, saw and nail.
Aesthetic of Cedar Siding
There is not a whole lot that can beat the unique, natural look of cedar shingles. As you can see in our video, each shingle is installed individually, giving every piece it’s own unique look. This creates a beautiful texture and golden tone to your home. If you are looking for a rustic, but fresh look for your exterior, cedar shingles may be the way to go. They can also be stained or painted to get the exact look and color you want for your home.
Maintenance of Cedar Siding
Cedar will inevitably fade to a sort of light grey color, which can still be a nice aesthetic, giving a truly rustic look. It also possesses natural anti-fungal properties, so you shouldn’t need to worry about rotting or anything like that. However, if it’s the fresh golden hue you wish to keep, there are some things you need to do to maintain that. The shingles should be sealed or stained upon installation, and that same treatment applied annually, or even as often as bi-annually to truly maintain that color. It can be washed and re-applied as well, or re-stained as often as you think to slow that natural color change.
